The latest statements by Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly regarding Azerbaijan during her visit to Armenia raise serious doubts about the fairness of her country’s foreign policy, Pakistani international relations analyst Khalid Taimur Akram told reporters.
“Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly's recent visit to Armenia and joint press conference with her Armenian counterpart, Ararat Mirzoyan, have raised significant concerns due to her unfounded and baseless accusations against Azerbaijan. Minister Joly's remarks included threats of sanctions against Azerbaijan, a stance that comes across as particularly hypocritical, given Canada's own historical involvement in the mistreatment and genocide of indigenous peoples,” he noted.
“It appears that minister Melanie Joly may have been influenced or misguided by Armenian diaspora groups in Canada, as her statements lack the objectivity and impartiality expected of a foreign minister. Rather than fostering diplomatic relations and seeking peaceful resolutions to regional conflicts, she seems to be catering to the sentiments of the Armenian diaspora in Canada.”
“It is showing that Canada's foreign policy regarding the South Caucasus is unduly influenced by Armenia, especially given the recent series of statements and actions. Canada should refrain from making such a statement and should respect Azerbaijan's territorial integrity,” the expert added.
“The lack of balance in her approach, as well as the perceived influence of Armenian diaspora groups, have the potential to hinder peaceful resolutions in the region and damage Canada-Azerbaijan relations.”
